Mission/Philosophy

Hanahau`oli’s mission is to respect the uniqueness of each individual as it promotes respect for self, others and our diverse global community.  We develop individuals who are independent, flexible, perseverant and collaborative; they show an interest in continued learning, challenge themselves and value play.  Educational excellence is achieved as children discover the excitement, challenge and joy of learning.  Expanding and deepening their understanding of the world through thematic units helps Hanahau`oli children pursue their interests, discover passions, think critically and creatively and develop a sense of groundedness.  Our mission validates childhood and the way children naturally learn as it emphasizes “learning by doing.”  The arts are emphasized as is a strong connection between school, home and the world of the child.  Hanahau`oli strives always to live up to the meaning of its name, “joyous work.”

In support of our mission Hanahau`oli,

  • Creates a close connection between home and school recognizing that parents are a child’s first teachers and work with the school to promote learning;
  • Educates the whole child: cognitively, socially, physically and emotionally;
  • Values the natural way children learn and the need for time to be a child;
  • Provides a developmentally appropriate, child-centered program;
  • Respects that children demonstrate different strengths and develop at different rates;
  • Recognizes that real-life problems and situations offer the best means for constructing meaning;
  • Supports collaborative learning, inquiry and self-reflection
  • Focuses on continuous progress for each child as it provides feedback on learning and growth
